HOW TO create a layered Chalk Paint look The Shipwreck Sideboard
•Posted on February 25 2026
When we first found this vintage sideboard, she was a bit of a wreck. The shape was gorgeous, but let’s just say the surface had seen better days! Here’s how we took her from "dated disaster" to that stunning shipwrecked worn and weathered look:
1. The Prep Work
First, we gave her a little facelift by removing the old backplate and mirror. We filled in the holes and sanded the top down to the bare wood. Instead of painting the top, we just used dark wax. It nourished the wood and gave it a rich, moody sheen while letting that natural grain peek through.

2. Layering the Texture
This is where the magic (and the mess) starts. We did three distinct layers of chalk paint, letting each one dry overnight:
-
Layer 1: We went in with Wild Tusk chalk paint (a soft white) and focused on creating tons of texture. We weren’t looking for smooth her, the bumpier, the better.
-
Layer 2: Next came Royal Navy chalk paint. We painted this right over the white, adding even more raised edges and texture.
-
Layer 3: Finally, we covered everything with Adrianna chalk paint, a bright turquoise. We kept this layer a bit smoother to make sure everything was fully covered.
3. The "Smurf" Phase (Sanding)
Once she was totally dry, it was time for the heavy lifting. It took two of us to lug her outside for the electric sanding.
By gently sanding back the top turquoise layer, we started exposing the navy and white underneath. This is what creates that "shipwrecked" vibe, it looks like years of authentic wear and tear. Pro tip: Do this outside and wear a mask/goggles, or you will end up looking like a Smurf from all the blue dust!
4. The Finishing Touches
To give her some soul and depth, we applied dark wax and clear wax mixing them up, all over the body. We went a little heavier in some spots and lighter in others to make it look aged and authentic. We kept the hardware simple, swapping in some vintage pieces we already had in our stash.
What We Used:
-
Paint: Wild Tusk, Royal Navy, and Adrianna Artisan Chalk Paint
-
Finishes: Artisan Clear and Dark Wax
This was such a fun project! You can get a totally different vibe just by swapping out the paint colors or the wax. This beauty has already headed off to her new home, but she was a blast to create.
